MIC Presented the project of the new tram-train for the city of Varese

June 2020

Saturday June 27 the project “Varese Tram-Train, a different idea of a city” was publicly presented. The presentation was held in webinar format, chosen to respect the restrictions suggested by the COVID-19 pandemy. The conference was promoted by the Committee for the Varese Tram-Train, which aims at promoting and developing the plan.
The plan aims at transforming the existing rail service within the urban area of Varese in a “tram-train” service, which exploits the existing railway infrastructure to offer a transport service more suited to the urban area of Varese. The Committee for the Varese Tram-Train commissioned to MIC Mobility in Chain to write the feasibility plan of the intervention.
The participants to the webinar were: Giovanni Arioli, president of the del Committee for the Varese Tram-Train; Giuseppe Navarini, governor of the Rotary district 2042, Luca Guala, transport engineer of MIC and director of the team that wrote the feasibility plan; Davide Galimberti, mayor of Varese; Nicoletta Gozo, manager for ENEA of the SmartItaly Goal project; Roberta Pezzetti, director of the Smarter centre of the Universtity of Insubria; Massimo Colombo, president of the civil builders association of Varese; Antonella Zambelli president of FIPE Confcommercio Asscom Varese and Piero Poggioli, professor of architecture and composition at the Milan Politechnical school.
Guala described the plan which consists in the realization of eight new metro-tram stops and an interchange station between trams and rail services. The exposition and the ensuing debate highlighted not only the transport advantages of the plan, in terms of travel time and accessibility, but also the opportunities that it offers in terms of urban development near the new stops, recovery of precious urban space in the area of the current central stations and support to the requalification of the run down neighbourhoods of Varese.
The plan arose considerable interest and enthusiasm in all the sides that took part to the webinar, be they political, cultural and productive. Such enthusiasm and interest can become a strong support to the project when it will be financed and realized.
