Empoli BiciPlan

The town of Empoli has committed to invest In cycling to satisfy the mobility demand of its citizens. While the compact and dense medieval city centre already is rather bicycle-friendly, the more recent neighborhoods are characterized by a car-centric setting, typical of the 70’s: low-density housing and wide roads encourage the use of cars and speeding. The city government aims to achieve the cycling potential of the city and to restore harmony between all road users, by creating a proper cycle network and reasserting the value of pedestrian spaces.

The cycling strategy is based on the thorough analysis of the city’s streets and public places, from the perspective of cyclists, pedestrians and drivers. The “BiciPlan” prepared for Empoli is a planning tool that identifies the main cycling connections (“Ciclovie”) to form a city-wide cycle network. It defines the most fitting typologies for each route, prioritizes them and proposes traffic calming measures as well as 30 km/h zones. The goals of the plan are redistributing public space, delivering high safety standards and maximizing permeability for both cyclists and pedestrians.

The “BiciPlan” has been adopted by the city government and the first pilot project is in the process of being developed. This includes the design of two cycle routes and the transformation of a neighbourhood into a 30 km/h zone.
