Perkins+ Will together with the Flinders University of Australia have embarked on a plan to conceptualize an integrated vision for the campus and its surroundings in Adelaide, South Australia. MIC was asked to support them in framing a transportation master plan for the area around the Darlington interchange.
The goal was to take the advantage of the ongoing renovations and road upgrades in the site to develop integrated solutions able to optimize the accessibility to the existing communities and improve the connectivity of the precinct composed by the University Campus, Tonsley, Bedford Park and Clovelly Park neighborhoods.
Particular attention has been given to the opportunities resulting from the interaction of the precinct with the planned M2 expressway extension at the Darlington interchange. The study has also evaluated other elements such as the extension of the Tonsley railway line, the implementation of the Sturt river greenway, the renovation of Sturt road streetscape and the provision of an interchange HUB and park&ride facility in the area.
Key areas of focus included the following:
- The planned transformation of the wider context in terms of road network and public transport system, in particular the M2/ South Road corridor upgrade project;
- The extension of the Tonsley railway line;
- Review of the travel experience for different user categories accessing the area by all modes of transport;
- Push for the change of current habits and behaviors by fostering soft modes such us walking or cycling and the use of innovative solutions.
